here? >> roller coaster week hitting a high note for president obama. the new jobless numbers are easing the pain of his poor debate performance and bring romney's momentum to a sharp stop or it may not. joining me now, "new york times" columnist, nick kristof. let's start with the job figures today. because it's clearly good news for barack obama politically if nothing else. >> not only the numbers today but the revisions for the last two months. we seem to really be on a trajectory and you know, this is going -- apparently what really matters is not the economy for the year but the economy at the moment as people approach the election. people are beginning to vote. >> the good news for barack obama there. not so good news his performance at the debate. common consensus is a bit of a turkey. >> he blew it. >> why did he blow it? he's such a skillful orator usually. >> it's a paradox. he's a skillful communicator at his best and he was really at his worst. there are various theories. one is that he was coached it would be unpresidential to attack, that it may be a particular p

week's performance by barack obama, get to change that conversation on thursday, and to really talk specifically about the ryan budget. joe biden told reporters last week that what he's doing is looking at ryan's policies and seeing how he can apply them to the ryan/romney ticket as a whole. what they really would like to do is talk a lot about those ryan fiscal policies. things like kucutting spending, reforming medicare, looking at social security. what biden would like to do is talk a lot about those issues. one issue for the vice president, he hasn't been doing a lot of interviews or interactions with reporters. he hasn't really been questioned on a lot of the claims he makes about the ryan budget on the campaign trail. so it's going to be sort of a new thing for him to be questioned by reporters by the moderator, and by the candidate himself on the claims he's making on how those budget policies would impact everyday americans. >> a lot was said four years ago about joe biden's debate with sarah palin. now, he has known congressman ryan for quite some time. they have dealt toge

-making coming out of the obama camp regarding president obama's debate performance last week that blamed everything from the altitude, to the moderator. over the weekend i saw reports that they were now blaming john kerry for doing a poor job as a stand in for governor romney during their mock debate sessions. look, it wasn't just a bad debate for president obama, it's been a bad four years. he just doesn't have the issues or the facts on his side. we have 23 million americans who are struggling for work, we have 47 million americans of record on food stamps. one in six americans living in poverty. this obama economy has not worked for people and we can't afford another four years like the last four. bill: you know what democrats are saying, they are saying that mitt romney was lying. that's the word they are using. james kleinsberg talked about. others talked about fabricating issues. what does the romney team say about those charges? >> i'll tell you, bill, this is a very petulant and unpresidential response from the obama campaign team. i tell you the big difference in that debate as

get the sense that obama never watched the debates that romney and i had, particularly in florida. even though both my wife and i have said publicly over the last couple weeks if romney arrives as tough, as aggressive with the clarity and the assertiveness he used in florida, we thought he would do very, very well but i got the sense that obama came in in a very relaxed way, without adequate preparation, and frankly was stunned at the intensity and at the facts. one of the challenges the obama team has with their whole new mantra which is if only mitt romney had been a nice person it would have been a better debate, romney just piled on with fact after fact after fact -- i'm talking about facts like 23 million unemployed is a pretty specific fact. >> what about this fact. what about this fact, mr. speaker. romney claimed that president obama's cutting $716 billion from medicare that will affect current people in the program. was that a fact? >> that certainly is what the congressional budget office says. the numbers for that have been pretty well vetted over and over again. >> our

that this was a preplanned attack and yet the obama administration, the white house, the president, all of the individuals involved, spent the course of the next week or so denying that. what's going on here? is this incompetence? is it confusion, or, is it a deliberate, intentional cover-up? >> i think it is deliberate to downplay the threats because clearly the narrative that the obama campaign has been trying to push that usama bin laden is dead and al qaeda is crushed and we know that is not true. like a balloon, if you crush the balloon and just looking at the front of it looks like al qaeda may be dead but you missed the fact that it is popping out in all these other areas. gregg: what white house press secretary jay carney and u.n. ambassador susan rice were telling the american people, not to mention the folks on capitol hill, was simply untrue. they were doing that for more than a week as we mentioned. now the latest offering up an explanation is general james clapper, the director of national intelligence. and here's his explanation and or excuse depending upon your point of view. we'll put it o
